Helping your Dog Eat Liver

Not all dogs are open or will willingly eat liver or organ meat despite being raw. This can be a demerit to most pet owners who are transitioning. While organ meats are great and beneficial for dogs, not all pets will love them the first time they try them.

Therefore, it is up to the pet owner to do what they must to ensure that their pets embrace this food. Usually, the texture and smell of organ meats repulse most of these pets. However, you can do a few things to ensure your pet comes on board.

1.  Chop the Liver into Small pieces and Mix with their Favorite Food

This is the best way to introduce the pet to this type of raw meat. It is a trick that helps hide the smell and texture by masking it with their favorite meal. It also slowly weans the dog into the organ meat delicacy and helps them gradually get accustomed. Most pets will not lobe the small of liver, or its texture. However, after some time they get used to it and look forward to it. Don’t make it too obvious the first few days.

2.  Feed your Pet Frozen Food

You can also hide the texture and smell of organ meat by serving your pet frozen meat. Most pets will comfortably consume such meat and will not struggle in any way. However, when starting, limit the amount of frozen food you give them and gradually adjust.

3.  Pan Sear the outside of the Organ Meat.

This is not to say that you should cook meat. Instead, it only means charring the outside cover of the organ meat to mask the taste and smell of the meat and make it agreeable to the pet. The cooked smell and taste will be interesting to your pet and encourage them to try it. The goal is not to cook or denature the useful proteins and nutrients in the meat.

4.  Variety May Work

This means feeding the pet organ meats from different types of animals. You can try turkey, chicken, beef, and other animal organs until you find the one they enjoy most.

5.  Be Tough

Since you know how beneficial this kind of meat is for your pet, you sometimes have to ignore them and insist on having your way. Do not change the type of meal just because they expect you to. Usually, dogs are smart enough to hold it out with the hope that you will eventually change the meal. If you insist on what you want them to have, they will get hungry and eventually have it.

However, in the case of puppies who may be more stubborn, consider dehydrating the organ meat. They are more likely to eat these better than the raw in their original form.

With high-quality organs and raw meat like those from Houston Raw Pet Food, you can be sure that you are doing the right thing for your pets no matter how difficult the transition phase is.
